A Letter from Gamma Chapter Vice President Jarod VanDrunen

Greetings to my brothers old and new! I am beyond excited to share the details of and extend an invitation to the first fraternity formal we have hosted in 2 years. The current global heath crisis has put an equal amount of strain on our academic and fraternal calendars. But, with light at the end of the tunnel, it’s time to bring back and demonstrate a sense of normalcy and celebrate the completion of another trip around the sun.

We’ve been working hard behind the scenes to create a formal event unlike any other – with emphasis on attendance that is inclusive of all our chapters as well as both active and alumni brothers. Please plan on joining us stag or with your date for an evening of food, celebration, history, and brotherhood aboard the Madam Carroll – Indiana’s Largest (and alumni owned!) Registered Vessel on Saturday, April 30th. I have included all the details for this event below. Should you have any questions, feel free to contact me directly: 574-806-7482.

About the Venue

At 135 feet long and weighing in at 300 tons, the Madam Carroll is the largest registered boat in the state of Indiana. The vessel has an operational capacity of 500 guests and a license to party. She was launched on Lake Freeman in Monticello, Indiana in August of 1976. The vessel was purchased in 2019 by Gamma Alumni Chris Peters and Chris Lehe who have transformed the business into a year-round operation and live music destination.

Your ticket is inclusive of this excursion, entertainment, and includes your dinner. The Madam Carroll has a full service bar, come thirsty. This event was made financially possible through the generous donations of many of our alumni. Any additional proceeds generated from this event will go directly to the active chapter and assist them in hitting the ground running for a successful next semester.

Directions and Accommodation Information

The Madam Carroll is located on Lake Freeman, in Monticello, IN. Her home port is about 1.5 hours North of Indianapolis and 1.5 hours South of Chicago.

The Madam Carroll does not have overnight accommodations. However, we have a partnership with the Best Western Plus Brandywine Inn & Suites. The hotel has set aside a block of rooms for this event. It is less than one mile from the boat dock. Patrons of the boat receive 10% off their accommodations at check-in when they display their cruise tickets. To make a reservation, please call (574) 583-6333.

Additional Air BnB or lodging may be available and sourced locally online. Feel free to give Jarod a call for more details.

Regarding Inclement Weather:

The Madam Carroll cruises rain or shine. However, it is the sole discretion of this vessels captain and ownership to determine if inclement weather could create hazardous conditions in which case the ship will remain at dock and this event will continue as scheduled.

Regarding Lake Levels:

After nearly 100 years of keeping Lake Freeman and Lake Schafer level, the US Fish and Wildlife Department intervened and mandated that the water flow leaving the Oakdale Dam be maintained to a specific cubic foot per second to protect an endangered mussel species below the dam on the river. In times of drought, the water levels in Lake Freeman are dropped to maintain constant river flows below the dam. In this event, it becomes unsafe for the vessel to cruise. If this is the case, the ship will remain at dock and this event will continue as scheduled. You can learn more about this erroneous calculation on behalf of the US Fish and Wildlife Department and how you can help the Madam Carroll continue her operation in this article.
